Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and non-chemical facial rejuvenation treatment. It gently exfoliates the surface of your skin, revealing a vibrant and more youthful complexion.

An overview of microdermabrasion

The microdermabrasion procedure involves removing the upper layers of your skin using a stream of aluminum oxide crystals. This process stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and new cells, which improves the health and appearance of your skin.

The benefits

At Fenner Plastic Surgery and Med Spa, we use microdermabrasion to treat a variety of mild skin conditions. We commonly recommend the treatment to men and women who want to:

  • Restore a clear and vibrant complexion
  • Reduce fine lines and light wrinkles
  • Improve acne and acne scarring
  • Lighten age spots
  • Minimize pores
  • Minimize redness associated with rosacea

The microdermabrasion treatment experience: What to expect during your appointment

Most of our patients report that the microdermabrasion treatment experience is quite pleasant and easy to tolerate. To begin, you will lie comfortably on the treatment table while we thoroughly cleanse your face. We will then apply aluminum oxide crystals to exfoliate your skin. From there, we will move the microdermabrasion unit over the treatment area to clear away the crystals and surface skin cells. Your body will respond to this process by producing new collagen and elastin – along with a more youthful complexion.

The entire experience should take just 30 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the size of your treatment area. It is not painful, though you may experience a warming sensation. There is no downtime and you will be free to return to work and your normal daily routine right away, making microdermabrasion a true “lunch time” procedure. However, your skin will be more sensitive than usual throughout the next few days, so it’s important to wear sunscreen.

Are you a candidate?

If you need to address relatively mild cosmetic issues, such as light acne scarring and very fine lines, microdermabrasion may be an appropriate treatment. In general, it is safe for men and women of all skin types and colors. During your private consultation at our medical spa, we will carefully assess your skin and help you determine if microdermabrasion can achieve your aesthetic goals.

It's important to note that microdermabrasion is best for mild imperfections. If you struggle with more advanced signs of aging, deep scars, or extensive wrinkles, you may require a more intensive procedure. In addition, microdermabrasion is not recommended for pregnant women or patients with active acne.

The results

Once your microdermabrasion treatment is complete, some mild redness is to be expected for a day or two. Although you may see a visible improvement in your complexion after just one session, most patients need three to four treatments along with maintenance visits every six weeks to achieve their optimal results.

Microdermabrasion is a safe and highly effective way to correct mild surface imperfections and restore a more youthful complexion. To learn more about what this treatment can do for you, please contact our office today and schedule a private consultation.
