A popular procedure among both adults and children, otoplasty is designed to correct large, protruding, and misshapen ears – enhancing your overall appearance and renewing your confidence.

 The benefits

Otoplasty is associated with an array of cosmetic and emotional benefits. When done correctly, the procedure has the power to:

  • Reduce the size of large, prominent ears
  • Reposition protruding ears closer to the head
  • Sculpt balanced, symmetrical and attractive ears
  • Prevent bullying and teasing for younger children

The procedure
What to expect

Ear surgery is done under general anesthesia for children and local anesthesia for adults and teens. To begin the procedure, Dr. Fenner will create a small incision behind each ear. Through those openings, he will expose and reshape the underlying cartilage, remove excess skin, and create a smaller and more attractive structure. To correct protruding ears, he will reposition them so they rest closer to the head. Once more discreet ears have been sculpted, Dr. Fenner will close the incisions and wrap heavy bandages around your head to protect the area.

Are you a candidate?

A very safe and time-proven procedure, otoplasty is ideal for adults and children who are unhappy with the size, shape and position of their ears. The best candidates are healthy non-smokers without serious illnesses. The surgery is appropriate for children once their ears have stopped growing, which usually occurs at around five or six years old.

The recovery

You will be free to return home immediately after ear surgery to begin the recovery process. The heavy bandages around your head will need to remain in place for a few days. At that point, Dr. Fenner will replace them with lighter bandages. One week after the procedure, the bandages will be removed and you will need to wear a soft headband over your ears.

Most patients can expect to take one week off from work and school after otoplasty. It is important to protect your ears during this time. This includes sleeping on your back, keeping your head elevated, and avoiding vigorous activity. Some swelling and discomfort is normal after surgery and should improve within several days.

The results

Your initial otoplasty results will be apparent immediately, with smaller ears that no longer protrude. However, the full healing process can take up to eight weeks.

At that point, your results will be considered final with beautifully discreet ears that blend in with the rest of your features.

Regarding scars, Dr. Fenner carefully places otoplasty incisions to ensure that they are well-hidden within the creases behind your ears. As such, any post-surgical marks will be virtually imperceptible once the area has healed.
